New welfare statistics provide yet another reason to invest in the West

Jul 16, 2018

Today’s revelations by the Herald Sun that four out of five top Victorian postcodes for people living on welfare long-term are found in Melbourne’s West come as no surprise to the region’s peak advocacy body LeadWest, who have been calling for social impact investment in the West for almost a year.

Melbourne’s West experiences high levels of disadvantage, with families and communities experiencing high levels of unemployment and homelessness due to a lack of government investment vital social and environmental infrastructure. LeadWest and the local councils they represent, believe that social impact investment – investments made with the intention of generating measurable social, environmental, and economic outcomes – would improve financial and social outcomes for the families living in Melbourne’s West.

“It’s time for our politicians to step up and invest in the health, wellbeing, and future of Melbourne’s West,” said LeadWest CEO Craig Rowley.

“The West is the fastest growing area of Melbourne, yet as today’s figures show we face some of the highest levels of disadvantage in the whole of Victoria. We welcome the efforts governments have made in our region to date, but as this data shows there is still much more to be done.

“We have the solution, and that solution is social impact investment. Last year we laid out a plan for what this investment could achieve and how, this year we want to see that plan put into action.

“Social impact investment could help to support effective solutions to the many areas of long-term and entrenched disadvantage experienced by people in Melbourne’s West. This includes a reliance on welfare.

“Melbourne’s West has the potential to be a thriving hub of innovation and activity. We do not want to see that future come crashing down because of a lack of investment in our region,” said Mr Rowley.
