New LIFT grants for the West welcomed, but further boosts encouraged

LeadWest today welcomed the Victorian government’s awarding of Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT) grants to two businesses in Melbourne’s west, and encouraged governments to consider what further action can be taken to boost construction and advanced manufacturing in the region.

The grants, awarded to Unipod in Truganina and TFI Group in Laverton North, will support 93 automotive workers to transition into these growing businesses. 85 positions will be created at Unipod, and 8 at TFI Group.

“As the closure dates for the remaining major automotive manufacturers in Melbourne’s west draw closer, it’s important that we are doing everything we can to support workers to transition into new jobs,” said LeadWest CEO Craig Rowley.

“LeadWest was pleased that the Victorian Government chose to increased funding for LIFT grants in the recent State Budget, and it is great to see this funding help to secure opportunities for workers in our region.

“Construction, manufacturing and logistics will all be central to economic growth in Melbourne’s west, so we support the government’s decision to support worker transition into these areas.

“While these new jobs are welcome, there are still many automotive workers facing uncertain futures in the region, as well as many young people searching for work.

“We strongly encourage both State and Commonwealth governments to consider further measures to promote growth in our region's key industries, including fast-tracking the development of the Western Interstate Freight Terminal in Truganina and the Outer Metropolitan Ring Transport Corridor.”
