New Footscray Children’s Hub is good news, but more investment is still needed

Feb 15, 2018

LeadWest welcomes the Victoria Government's announcement that Footscray families will soon be able to access a new one-stop-shop bringing kindergarten and Maternal Child and Health Services together under one single roof.

A new integrated early learning centre is to be built adjacent to Footscray City Primary School as part of the new Footscray Learning Precinct.  Built in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council,  the new centre will include rooms for kindergarten programs, provide Maternal and Child Health services and provide facilities for other family services for the community.

The Victorian Government is aware that over 35 babies are born every day across the six local council areas in Melbourne's West. The Victorian Government is also aware that some of these children are born into circumstances that are less than ideal.

LeadWest has informed the Victorian Government that Helping kids thrive in the West is a policy priority for the region.  LeadWest advocates that the Victorian Government should:

  • Create a Centre for Parenting Excellence in Melbourne's West will help hundreds of young families to thrive every year, by restoring health and well-being where there is distress in the infant-parent relationship.
  • Undertake a comprehensive review of maternal and early childhood services offered in Melbourne’s West to ensure that the right mix of services is being offered in the right locations, particularly the rapidly growing areas.
  • End the uncertainty around 15-hour kinder funding, and provide a long-term commitment to young learners in the West.
  • Provide a clear, long term investment pipeline for new schools in the growing outer West, as well as urgent maintenance and upgrade funding for established schools in the inner West
  • Take action and provide funding to address blackspots in youth mental health services across the region

Quotes attributable to LeadWest's CEO Craig Rowley:

“LeadWest welcomes Victorian Government investment in first-rate facilities – like the Truganina East Integrated Family Learning Centre.

“Melbourne's West is growing very fast and over 35 babies are born every day across the region, so this region needs additional investment to ensure they’re ready for kinder, ready for school and ready for life.”
