New Children’s Hub In Melbourne’s West, but more investment needed

Jan 24, 2018

LeadWest welcomes the Victoria Government's announcement that work is set to begin on the Altona Early Years Hub, a new $6.9 million integrated children’s centre at Altona P-9 College.

The hub will include long day care, three and four-year-old kindergarten, playgroups and Maternal and Child Health, as well as parenting, intervention and family support services all under one roof.  It has been designed with multipurpose and flexible spaces to support a range of integrated early years services for local families. It will offer 76 long day care and 99 kindergarten places and a range of early learning programs to help young children transition to primary school.

The Victorian Government provided $1.6 million for the project through the Children’s Facilities and Capital Grants program.

The Victorian Government is aware that over 35 babies are born every day across the six local council areas in Melbourne's West. The Victorian Government is also aware that some of these children are born into circumstances that are less than ideal.

LeadWest has informed the Victorian Government that Helping kids thrive in the West is a policy priority for the region.  LeadWest advocates that the Victorian Government should:

  • Create a Centre for Parenting Excellence in Melbourne's West will help hundreds of young families to thrive every year, by restoring health and well-being where there is distress in the infant-parent relationship.
  • Undertake a comprehensive review of maternal and early childhood services offered in Melbourne’s West to ensure that the right mix of services is being offered in the right locations, particularly the rapidly growing areas.
  • End the uncertainty around 15-hour kinder funding, and provide a long-term commitment to young learners in the West.
  • Provide a clear, long term investment pipeline for new schools in the growing outer West, as well as urgent maintenance and upgrade funding for established schools in the inner West
  • Take action and provide funding to address blackspots in youth mental health services across the region
