More needed for the West from Libs-Nats roads package

Jun 28, 2018

LeadWest has called for the Victorian Liberals and Nationals to prioritise more transport infrastructure for Melbourne’s West, which is the fastest growing region in Victoria.

LeadWest CEO Craig Rowley said the roads package announced today would do little to assist traffic congestion and public transport access for the over 900,000 residents of Melbourne’s West.

“The transport network in Melbourne’s West is struggling to meet the needs of the people living here today, let alone the additional 1 million who will be moving here over the coming decades,” said Mr Rowley.

“There are also many other key road corridors in our region, such as the Western Highway and the Calder Freeway, that are becoming completely inadequate for the numbers of people using them every day and need urgent upgrade.”

Mr Rowley also said that any investment in roads should be focused on improving public transport services in the West.

“We urgently need investment in additional bus services and the road infrastructure to ensure those buses can get people where they need to go.

“Right now, 70 % of people living in Melbourne’s West don’t have access to frequent public transport within walking distance. As our population grows to nearly 2 million, we simply cannot have all of those people relying on cars to get around.

“There is still five months to go until the state election, so we hope there will be more announcements to address urgent transport needs in our region from all parties.”
