LeadWest Advocate - A New Campaign For Families In Melbourne's West

Sep 17, 2018

Launch of Generation West campaign marked by 10,000th baby born in Melbourne's West this year

LeadWest has launched new campaign to deliver essential services for babies and young families in Melbourne’s West. Generation West launched on September 7th, coinciding with the birth of the West’s 10,000th baby for 2018.
Generation West is a community-led campaign of local health providers, Councils, and community groups coordinated by LeadWest. The campaign is calling on local MPs to commit to significant investment in services for the first 1000 days of life ahead of November’s State election.

Generation West is calling for:

  • A Centre of Parenting Excellence in Melbourne’s West
  • Expanding services for vulnerable families where they live
  • Boosting dental health for children in our region
  • More support for new parents before birth and after, and
  • A comprehensive review and new plan for maternal and paediatric services in Melbourne’s West

With 14,610 babies born each year in Melbourne’s West, averaging more than 40 per day, the 10,000th baby was born on September 7th.
LeadWest Health and Wellbeing spokesperson Councillor Samantha Byrne, urged the community to join the campaign to ensure every child in Melbourne’s West gets the best chance to thrive.
“I’m the mum of a toddler myself and know just how important the first thousand days of a child’s life is for their development. It is crucial we give children in the West the best start to life possible.
“We have a booming population. Over half of all households in the West are made up of families and children. It’s only September and in Melbourne’s West we’re already celebrating our 10,000th new baby born just this year!
“Melbourne’s West is a wonderful place to live and raise a family but if we don’t get funding to expand services families will face real problems accessing early years support they might need.
“It’s not only our massive growth but the lack of proper planning and provision of early childhood services that are problems. We need our local MPs to commit to action before this gets worse."
