Melbourne's west is undergoing major transformation. It's a dynamic region. The majority of Victoria's population growth is happening here at the Gateway to Victoria. At present, Melbourne's west is Australia's growth hotspot.
LeadWest is a regional organisation for Melbourne's west. Please contact us if you need more information on sustainable growth and development in Melbourne's west.

Werribee River Biolink Action Plan Project
LeadWest, with funding support from the Vision for Werribee Plains, has commenced a project to develop a land-use strategy and biodiversity action plan for the Werribee River corridor between the river mouth at Werribee South and upstream at the Werribee Gorge and the Lerderderg Gorge. Read more ...
We have produced a Desktop Report providing a background summary to the project, a definition of the Werribee River biolink, a collation of current biodiversity assets and environmental programs, and an overview of local and regional planning.
Photographs taken on site visits are published on LeadWest's website and Facebook page.
The Biolink Action Plan is currently being prepared and is likely to be published in June 2012.
Building Melton Together
Building Melton Together is a collaborative, industry-based initiative that addresses the skills shortages in the building and construction industry within the Shire of Melton.
The initiative assists the building and construction industry to match its jobs to an available skilled workforce in the Shire of Melton.
Building Melton Together provides a "one stop shop" that links and supports developers, builders, sub contractors, jobs services, education and training providers and jobseekers.
The initiative is a practical response to the rapid growth in housing development in Melbourne's outer western suburbs, the fastest growing region in Australia.
Regional Rail Link: More than just a rail line
The Regional Rail Link is integral to how we support growth and renewal in Melbourne’s West, and the regions beyond - Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong.
The new State Government has announced that the project will proceed. The government will now consult with industry and stakeholders about opportunities to determine the earliest timelines for building the project, optimise scope and achieve cost savings.

West Gate Ramps
Community and business groups along with politicians, industry and the City of Maribyrnong have all called for the Victoria Government to build as soon as possible the West Gate truck ramps which were part of Victorian Transport Plan.
The ramps onto the West Gate Freeway, first proposed by Sir Rod Eddington’s 2008 study of Melbourne’s transport needs, will create a route for trucks that bypasses residential areas in Francis St and Somerville Rd with exits and entries from the West Gate Freeway before the bridge that takes them directly to the port via Hyde St and Whitehall St.
They will also provide an alternative route for many of the trucks that currently use streets in Footscray to access the port.
They will direct about one million trucks per year away from residential streets improving health and safety in the inner west and giving industry a 24/7 route to port.
A community rally in support of the West Gate ramps was held in Yarraville Gardens on Sunday 18th September 2011.

Western Agenda - A Strategic Action Plan for Melbourne's Western Region 2008 - 2011
The Western Agenda provides a roadmap to focus and unite the work of LeadWest and the many regional stakeholders in creating a prosperous, sustainable, healthy and fair region and improving the lives of people forming the communities of Melbourne's west.
For ease of reference, the Agenda is based around seven themes, but these need to be tackled together, in an integrated “joined up” approach because so many issues and actions impact across each other. The seven themes are:
- Education and Skills
- Economic Development and Jobs
- Transport and Infrastructure
- Health and Community Development
- Environment, Planning and Image
- Tourism, Arts, Culture and Recreation
- Regional Leadership
Our 2010 Chronical of Events (PDF) describes how LeadWest has progressed achievement of the Western Agenda over the past year.
Achievements are also detailed in our 2009 Chronical of Events (PDF) and 2007 and 2008 Chronical of Events (PDF).
