Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action

The Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action (WAGA) is an alliance of the local governments of Melbourne's west and Geelong and Moorabool . It was established in 2006 to bring together interested councils and organisations committed to working collaboratively to respond to climate change at a regional level.

The collective mission of WAGA is to create the professional environment where the western region is able to assist in the global task of stabilising the climate. WAGA aims to rapidly transform its communities from climate-damaging to climate friendly practices in a way that is simultaneously practical and profitable.

The seven WAGA member municipalities encompass over 3,500 square kilometres of Melbourne’s west, with approximate 650,000 residents. This area alone produces over 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions with the majority created from the industrial, residential and transport sectors.

WAGA's key projects include:

  • Development of a regional greenhouse strategy – a partnership with LeadWest and Western Melbourne Regional Development Australia to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and assist development of a sustainable low carbon economy in the region.
  • Implementation of WAGA’s Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan – addressing regional climate change risks and developing a monitoring, evaluation and reporting framework for adaptation performance.
  • Urban Sustainability Atlas – a trial of an online map that allows users to calculate solar radiation values of individual properties.
  • Environmental Upgrades of Buildings – a project to encourage building owners to undertake significant environmental improvements.

LeadWest, WAGA, and Western Melbourne Regional Development Australia have agreed to collaborate to develop a strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the region incorporated by the WAGA councils’ municipalities and help facilitate the region’s transition to a low carbon future. The strategy is known as Low Carbon West. The project partners consider it important to point to opportunities for businesses in Melbourne’s west as the region makes that transition.
