Alternative Education

Individually tailored or flexible learning opportunities are needed by some children and young people, particularly those who require additional support to meet their learning needs.  There are several alternative education providers in Melbourne's west.

Youth Connections providers work with young people to help make a successful transition to further education, training, or employment.

  • Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services is the Youth Connections provider across the City of Brimbank and City of Melton, using facilities in Melton, St Albans and Sunshine. Outreach to other sites within these local government areas is also available.
  • Westgate Community Initiatives Group Incorporated is the Youth Connections provider across the City of Hobsons Bay, City of Maribyrnong, City of Moonee Valley, and the City of Wyndham.

The Link Centre is a transition centre in Laverton for young people 15 years and over who, for a variety of reasons, are at risk of dropping out of mainstream secondary school. The Link Centre caters for 25 young people at a time and provides an individual program for each, covering a basic Year 10 program. In addition to a focus on literacy and numeracy skills, a social development program assists the young people to develop the self-confidence they need to commence employment, return to mainstream school or enrol in an alternative education setting. The opportunity to participate in work experience and voluntary work helps the young people to integrate with the community.

The SEDA AFL Victoria Sports Development Program in Werribee delivers programs that engage students in their education through their passion and provides them with formal education qualifications and key life skills. Students at SEDA complete year 11 and 12 and gain nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications from Certificate III to Diploma. SEDA in partnership with AFL Victoria provide students with the opportunity to study a practical curriculum linked with industry which sees them develop the skills and self-confidence to pursue pathways into employment or further study.
