Maribyrnong City Council
The City of Maribyrnong, formed in 1994 from the merger of the City of Footscray and the City of Sunshine, comprises the inner western suburbs between 5 and 10 kilometres from the Melbourne city centre.
At the 2011 Census, Maribyrnong had a population of 71,635. In the next two decades ahead, the population of Maribyrnong is expected to increase by 16,000.
Maribyrnong has the second most ethnically diverse population in Victoria, with 40% of residents born outside Australia. Residents come from more than 135 different countries and speak over 80 languages.
At 31.2 sq km in area, Maribyrnong is the smallest and most densely populated municipality in the metropolitan area. The area includes a large industrial sector. Changes in land use have resulted from the restructuring of local manufacturing industries and the relocation of the Commonwealth defence industries from the area.
Maribyrnong has the second most ethnically diverse population in Victoria, with 47.7% of residents born outside Australia.
